WV State Motocross Championships - Mama at Tomahawk MX

What a great weekend for racing in the beautiful mountains of wild and wonderful West Virginia. The Mid Atlantic Motocross Association returned here for round 6 of  8 in their 2020 race season. I believe we witnessed some of the closest racing of the year to date as riders chased those valuable year end championship points.

JWTF riders had a good showing at this years WV States.

Sleepy Hollow Two Stroke Shootout and HCS Pro AM

Story and Images By: Lexi Thompson

Sleepy Hollow 9-19-2020

This past weekend in Fredricksburg, Pennsylvania, Sleepy Hollow MX hosted their 11th annual U.S. 2 Stroke Shootout event. With not a cloud in the crystal blue sky, bikes took to the starting line to fight for the $5,000 purse.

Jack Rogers (35) leads the 125 Pro division at Sleepy Hollow.

The 125 pro class lined up with game faces on and ready to race. When the gate dropped of the first moto, 13 bikes raced up the uphill start. #35 of Jack Rogers on the Husqvarna earned the holeshot off the line leading into the first turn.

Just escaping the carnage of the first turn pileup, #15 of Cody Groves and the #749 rider, Trevor Schmidt, followed the leader, closely in 2nd and 3rd respectively. The standings remained as that until midway through the second lap, when Schmidt passed Groves along the back of the track. Rogers continued pulling ahead while the two fought for the position behind him. The Yamaha rider of Robert Piazza on the #777 was able to gain ground and trail the podium position holders.

Further back in the pack, Michael Lacore on the #33  and the #85 of John Bowlin were racing for a top 5 spot. Heading into the third lap, Cody Groves went down in a turn just before the finish line jump; this leaving him to finish the race in fourth place. This mistake allowed for Trevor Schmidt to push past and put pressure on Rogers for the lead. Piazza also got around Groves and was able to steal the podium position from him. The #454 in 5th place was charging ahead chasing Groves in hopes of stealing the 4th place spot, but fell short when the checkered flag waved.

With less than 3 laps to go of the 8 lap moto, Michael Lacore pulled off the track due to mechanical issues and was unable to finish the race, resulting in a DNF and an opening in the top positions. Despite Schmidt gaining time and getting closer to the leader, he was unable to make the pass, leaving Jack Rogers to finish the race in the same first place position that he started in. Robert Piazza rounded out the podium in 3rd.

Trevor Schmidt goes 2-1 to win the O/A 125 Pro division.

In the end it would be the KTM mount of Trevor Schmidt (above) racing to his second overall victory in as many weeks racing the 125cc bikes in the great state of Pa.

Top 5 O/A - 125 Pro

1. Trevor Schmidt    2-1
2. Jack Rogers          1-3
3. Bobby Piazza        3-2
4. Cody Groves         4-4
5. Alex Panzarella    5-5

Classes were held for all two stroke class bikes on Saturday at Sleepy Hollow - please check back in the coming days for full results.

The future of motocross is alive and well in our neck of the woods. 2020 racing has seen some of the best turnouts in years with the mini cycle classes having great numbers at the gate. The amateurs are faster than I've ever seen and the sponsors are taking notice.

MDRA and WNYMA at Miles Mountain Motocross

On Labor Day weekend we took our annual trek to Miles Mountain MX in Elkland, Pa. This facility that sits right on the PA / NY border is always a favorites stop in the series. With its 375 feet of elevation change, big air opportunities and views that go on for miles I'm sure the 500 plus entries on the weekend enjoyed every minute of it.

Saturday offered an open practice day with lots of activities around the facility. Sunday we awoke to more beautiful weather and the red hot racing action that is always a given at this event. Check out a few of the winners on the day - then scroll down to link to all results and images from the weekend.

The future of the sport is bright as the 50cc gates have been full all year.
