Round #1 MAMA Race Series - at Tomahawk MX

It was long past due, but definitely worth the wait as the 2020 Mid Atlantic Motocross Association (MAMA) got to kick off their 2020 race season at Tomahawk MX in Hedgesville, WV. The weekend would see great weather for the just over 600 entries on the weekend.

Above, Gabe Woodrow would race to the Unlimited A division win on Saturday taking both moto wins. MAMA offers a full array of classes for both youth and adult racers over two days of competition. This weekend would be a time for the youth riders to shine as they work their way into the LL Super Regional coming up this weekend at Tomahawk. The Junior Mini groups would see full gates on both days of racing.

Below check out a few images and a short race report from Brapp Mag contributor Lexi Thompson from LT Photography:

On Saturday, the MAMA riders showed up to the mountainous Tomahawk MX Park ready to race. With the forecast calling for thunderstorms all day, the riders were pleasantly surprised when the clouds rolled out to reveal blue skies for a sunny race day.

The second moto of the day found the first division of Junior Minis 1 lining up that had 43 total entries for the day initiating qualifiers for the main event. The 7-11 year olds fire off the gate, with the #263 of Joseph Oconnell on the KTM coming out with the holeshot. Following quickly behind is the Yamaha rider, Riccardo Chica on the #50. After riding up the steep uphill and taking the left turn through the shadows of the trees, Chica had the speed to surpass Oconnell for the first place position before he completed the first lap.

Chica was on fire all weekend long,

Before crossing the finish line on the first lap, Oconnell was then passed by Domanik Sensenig on the #14 Husqvarna, crediting Sensenig with the 2nd place position on the first lap. On the second lap, in the sweeping downhill turn, the #951 of Jackson Beck on the Husqvarna snagged the inside line, propelling himself through the deep ruts to pass Oconnell and earn a podium position for the moto.

Beck and Oconnell battle.

Sensenig still had his sights on the 1st place position, trying to charge ahead of Chica, gaining time as the laps ticked off. However, the checked flags waved for Chica, with Senseing falling just short in 2nd. Gapping 3rd place of Beck by a large section of track, who continued to battle with Oconnell, finally securing the position on the large uphill tabletop, holding his place for the rest of the moto. Just inside the top 5 was Charles Chialastri, who remained consistent for the duration of the race.

Sensenig had a great showing at Tomahawk.

Division two would bring another cast to the line up with #34 of Seven Henderson leading from wire to wire to win this division and eventually going on to win the second or main moto of the day. See the overall results after two motos below:

1. Seven Henderson
2. Riccardo Chica
3. Domanik Sensenig
4. Chadwick Nower
5. Joseph Oconnell

Seven Henderson would win his qualifier and the main O/A event on Saturday.

Sunday would bring another full gate of 39 riders to the mix for the Junior Mini 2 division. In addition to the Mama Series racers, others were here in preparation for the Loretta Lynn Youth Super Regional coming up this weekend June 26-28th right here at Tomahawk MX.  See the full results from the weekend by scrolling to the links below.
