Weekend Race Report - Race 3 Mama MX at Tomahawk

The Mid Atlantic Motocross Association, the motocross arm of AMA District 7 headed into Wild and Wonderful West Virginia to do battle at Tomahawk MX in mid August. Mother Nature tried to pull a fast one on us predicting an 80% chance of rain all week long. By the time the gates would drop we would just receive enough moisture to keep the dust down allowing perfect track conditions all weekend long.

Please watch a short race recap in the video below, then scroll down to see more of the action and link to results and images from all classes.

The racing action would be red hot on both Saturday and Sunday with a big thanks going out to both the MAMA organization and Chad G. and his crew for running such a smooth event.

Saturdays highlight would be a 22 team Battle Royal on the Corn Hole boards sponsored by:

No Reverse Racing, B Line Racing, BrappMag.com, Candys Charms and Top End Performance...

Top tossers - Stevie Ray Lloyd and Jeff Overstreet  would donate the

$100 Top Price back to the  MAMA organization.

Round 6 of the SRT AMA East Hare Scrambles Series presented by Beta - D2 Harescramble

Rd 6 AMA East-D2 Hare Scramble Series
August 16, 2020
Millville, NJ
Story: Keny Held
Photos: Melissa Stanwood

What can I say but wow!  This was quite an experiment that AMA East ventured out into.  A District 2 MX promoter, NJFOD, asked if he could co host a Hare Scramble.  We gave him the opportunity and working together, put on a truly amazing track.  3 miles of modified MX tracks and 4 miles of tight but flowing trail.  As luck would have it our 1st attempt to build the track was hampered by Hurricane Isaias the week before.

Well back to the drawing board.  Re routes and more SRT arrows and ribbons were needed.  An SOS flare was shot up in the air and help came from 5 local ECEA clubs who had their events compromised by Covid 19.

Without missing a beat they showed up with Staples guns and chain saws and a new course was made.  I can not thank them enough.  Come Sunday morning the event was now plagued with an acute weather system that would deliver an unfavorable forecast.  We sent out our section leaders to check the course for any storm damage but were met with another set back.  Sometime during the night a group of individuals pulled down most of the ribbons and the ones that remained were stapled in the wrong direction.  Ugh!  Not to surrender we went to an hour delay re-arrowed the entire course.  Better luck next time You Goons whoever you are.

Our 1st heat was the youth main.  They would traverse a 4 mile course with a mile of MX and 3 miles of trail.  Out to a very early lead was no stranger to AMA East, former 65cc champion, Ryan Gribbin aboard his KTM Supermini.   Close behind and in his sites was Team Perfect Storm's Vince Caramanna.  In 3rd place from the 2nd row was AMA East regular R.C. Weiss aboard his Husqvarna Supermini.

Gribbin would eventually check out and the 2nd place O/A battle would now be between Caramanna and Weiss.  At the halfway point it was quite apparent that an 85cc Junior would start making his was to the front.  None other then Yamaha's Ryder Sigety.  Ryder would continue his pressure on the leaders and in the end secure 3rd O/A by just a 1 second adjusted time.  In the end it was Gribbin, Weiss and Sigety.

Heat 2 was the Pee Wee 50's.  An attempt to start them on the MX track was futile.  The event was quickly red flagged and a restart of only the woods portion is exactly what the Dr ordered.  A dozen or so determined pee wees took off in true AMA East fashion and devoured the 1.5 mile course.  An early battle ensued between 2 Cobra mounted racers, Vance Glisson and Eugenio Santiago.  They would be just seconds apart for 4 laps.  Often coming through scoring bar to bar.  They would exchange the lead several times but it was Glisson  who came out in front on the final lap.  In 3rd place pushing them along was Aiden Hunt from the 2nd row aboard his dad prepped KTM.

Next heat was the 65cc and Jrs.  A group decision was made between the promoter and the racer families to run the exact same track as the 50's due to the deteriorating MX tracks.  This would be woods only combined with a Pee Wee MX track.  On the 1st lap it was Ryder Sigety #31 aboard his Blu Cru prepped Yamaha 65.  He would establish an early lead and never look back.  2nd and 3rd O/A would come from 2nd rows Nathan Oswald aboard his Schaeffers Motorsports KTM.  Behind Oswald was Jaylen Dixon gripping his trusty SUZ 65.

Next up was Heat 4 also known as the morning C event.  Unfortunately due to the weather and aforementioned saboteur, was now the afternoon C event.  The rain held off slightly but not enough to dry out the MX tracks.  We took a pole and the racers wanted the MX track.  They said if the Youth Main can do it we can do it.  The flag was dropped and off they went.

Almost immediately a battle between Team Perfect Storms Cate Nash (SUZ) and 2 brothers, Allen and Justin Adkins both aboard KTMs.  They would put on quite a show for the crowd traversing the bike swallowing wet sand track.  These young guns were setting the stage for the classes that followed.  At the halfway mark it was Yamaha mounted Mike Garrison from the C open class who would take the adjusted lead.  After 6 laps it would be Garrison who would O/A followed by Allen Adkins and Thomas Barry (Honda) from the C 250 class with the final podium position.

Heat 5 - The Main Event was to be a Beta Showdown.  With 2 Betas now in 1st and 2nd for O/A Series points, both Thorn Devlin (Newcomer) and Kyle McDonal (2018 - 2019 Champion) were lined up in attempt to lock up the points.  The series currently has 2 rounds remaining however with Covid and recent cancellations, it will be hard to judge this early in the year.  for that reason each racer has been doing their very best to make all the current rounds.  When the flag dropped it was Devlin with the holeshot and early lead.  At the halfway mark on lap 1, it was AMA East regular, Justin Lafferty in 2nd and McDonal in 3rd.

When they came around for the final leg it was Devlin, McDonal and then A-200 Racer Mad Max Fernandez.  Lafferty had faded back to 4th O/A.  Devlin would set a pace that no one could match and he was making it look EZ.  In talking with Devlin before the race and after he advised that attending the GNCC's has really brought his racing to a new level.  McDonal, who was not far behind kept up the pressure but after 8 laps it was not enough to catch Devlin.  Max Fernandez in the mean time was able to secure 3rd OA.  Someone get that kid a "AA" T-shirt already.  This is Mad Max's 2nd O/A Podium finish.  In the end it was a great event with plenty of racing action. With 2, possibly 3 rounds remaining, it is still undetermined who will be crowned the champion.  Our next round is scheduled on 09-06-20 @ VXCS in WV.  Stay tuned.

Top 5 Main O/A

1. Thorn Devlin - Beta
2. Kyle KcDonal - Beta
3. Max Fernandez - KTM

Round Three: AHRMA Mid Atlantic Cross-Country

Twilight Farms 7/12/2020

Author: Joshua Schucker - Photography: Lorena Walker

The middle of July is typically reserved for some downtime in the Mid Atlantic regional series to avoid some of the heat and humidity that settles into the area this time of year.  However, as another reminder that nothing about 2020 will be normal, racing in July seems just about right.  Originally scheduled for May 16th and postponed due to the pandemic response, the Twilight Farms event was rescheduled for July 12th. While July is not optimal, it goes without saying that the series’ participants are extremely grateful that the land owners chose to reschedule rather than cancel this event.

Set in a region of hills and valleys in Eastern York County, PA, the Roycroft family welcomed the Mid Atlantic’s best vintage riders to its Twilight Farms property for the second time. After a strong turnout and great feedback from its inaugural event in 2019, folks were eager to see what trail boss Ray Donet Jr. had in store for this year’s event. Last year’s race was clearly defined by the unique topography of the area. Using the hillsides surrounding a creek lined valley, the course made full use of the land ascending and descending the valley. This year’s course would follow a similar concept with the twist of reversing some aspects. The large uphill from 2019 was now a rocky winding descent to the creek bed below. Plenty of other hill climbs took its place and connected flowing two track and off-camber trail which made full use of the property. Some elements, such as several short steep-back creek crossings, were excluded from the morning’s vintage race due to potential difficulties with the limited ground clearance of the older bikes but were an interesting addition to the post-vintage event. This year’s course saw the addition of a universally praised grass-track section which switch-backed its way through an open pasture on the lower end of the property. And, although heat and humidity would prove to be a concern on this day, much of the property lies within the shade of the forest providing a bit of relief from the heat and dust. Challenging, fun, and unique, the Twilight Farms course certainly provided action, close racing, and plenty of conversation afterward.

Brumbaugh makes a pass on Grove.

A tight starting area was filled with participants for the morning’s vintage race. As the dust cleared, 49 riders had taken the green flag with top finishers on their way to accomplishing five laps. Christian Brumbaugh has been dominating the overall results in the vintage races in 2020, but Brian Grove, the runner-up at the last event, has been knocking on the door recently. Grove and his Husqvarna would take an early lead and carry it through the white flag lap, but it was clear that Brumbaugh was closing in. A last lap miscue in a rocky, rutted creek crossing would eliminate Grove’s advantage. Christian’s Yamaha DT would claim the lead and hold on to cross the line a minute ahead of Grove for his third win in as many races. Wyatt Stoup would stay close all day riding a Honda XL and round out the top three just behind Grove. Interestingly, the top three were all from the Vintage Open Expert class. Kyle Warner’s performances this year have been stellar aboard his small-bore Yamaha. Not only did he take the Vintage 100 Intermediate class win, but also finished 14th overall and was the last rider to finish on the lead lap. Another solid top-20 finish went to Suzuki PE mounted Daniel Zell as he claimed the Post Vintage 200 Novice class win over the XR200s of Joe Spayd and Eric Stalknecht. Sanford Quickel took command of the Vintage 60+ Expert class early on, did not succumb to pressure from the Yamahas of Alfred Schnug and Charlie Walker, and took the checkered flag on his Penton.

Grab an old bike and come join the fun.

Demonstrating remarkable turnout for a rescheduled event, sixty riders were entered in the afternoon Post Vintage race. Steve Mason Jr. and Dalton Dunman would swap the lead throughout the race, but Dunman’s KDX would come out on top for the overall victory while Mason’s IT175 would have to settle for runner-up. The day’s earlier victor, Brumbaugh, would bring his IT home in third and runner-up to Mason in the Post Vintage 200 Expert class. Glenn Hershey would pass Jim Laird on lap two and maintain the position until the checkered flag waved for his Can-Am “Black Widow”. Laird held his position to finish second to Hershey in the Historic 200 Intermediate class. Chris Hoffmeister also overcame an early deficit as he piloted his Montessa around early leader Jim Wazuka for the Historic Open Intermediate class win. Wazuka’s Bultaco would finish second making the class a battleground for Spanish marques. A large Post Vintage 50+ Intermediate class saw plenty of action throughout the race. Kevin Marshall took an early lead on his Kawasaki, but troubles on lap two would see him retire from the race handing the lead over to Can-Am mounted Tommy Tippett. Tippet would eventually finish the race in third place as Doug Kurz and Jamie Reitz freight trained him on lap four to finish first and second respectively.

B and B Yamaha's Craig Shenigo races his Post Vintage IT.

Thank you to everyone involved in making this event possible. Many thanks to Ray Donet Jr., and the Roycroft’s for the effort, hospitality, excellent food, and access to their beautiful property. Thanks to the Mid-Atlantic’s crew of volunteers that pursued a reschedule and showed the flexibility needed to make it happen. Thank you to the sponsors that support the regional events; Potomac Vintage Riders, Preston Petty Products, Stainless Cycle, Vee Rubber, Grove Printing, KMI Printing, and Works Enduro Riders.
