Area qualifiers begin this weekend for Rocky Mountain ATV/MC AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship, presented by Lucas Oil  Photo by David Smith at Race Day Pix PICKERINGTON, Ohio - The first of 57 area qualifiers for the Rocky Mountain ATV/MC AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship, presented by Lucas Oil, begin Feb. 11 at Arizona Cycle Park in Buckeye, Ariz. "Area qualifiers mark the first step in qualifying for the Rocky Mountain ATV/MC AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship," said AMA Motocross Manager Kip Bigelow. "I'm proud to have worked hand-in-hand with MX Sports to feature these races at some of the best racing facilities this country has to offer." Over the course of the next four months, area qualifiers are scheduled in eight regions - Northeast, Southeast, Mid-East, North Central, South Central, Northwest, Mid-West and Southwest. Racers of all ages will compete in various engine displacement classes, from 50cc to 450cc, in hopes of moving on to a regional qualifier. "After a long winter break, it's finally time to get back to racing," said Tim Cotter, director for MX Sports, the AMA's promoting partner for the amateur motocross national championship program. "As racers begin their journey on the infamous Road to Loretta's, it's our hope that family memories can be made and racing goals can be achieved." Racers who finish in the top of their respective classes at the regional championship level will be able to move on to the highly prestigious Amateur National Motocross Championship at Loretta Lynn's Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tenn. from July 31 through Aug. 5. The AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship is one of the longest-running motorsports championships in the country. The AMA launched the national championship program in 1975. That year, a series of regional races qualified 135 riders in three classes -- 125cc, 250cc and Open -- for the championship round in Baldwin, Kan. In 1982, the AMA partnered with MX Sports and the event moved to its current location at the Loretta Lynn Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tenn. There, the AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship continues to crown the country's top amateur motocross racers every summer.
